What is TRE®?

TRE® or Trauma & Tension Release Exercises is a simple way to access the autonomic nervous systems' tremor mechanism.  It is considered a somatic body-based practice for anyone suffering from stress, anxiety, trauma, or PTSD. It overcomes language barriers as it is a process that doesn't require talking about the event, feeling, or issue. We do some easy stretches, stressing and tiring out the muscles of the lower body, and building up a little shaking in the legs. We then lie on the floor and encourage these natural vibrations to move through the body, without trying to control or manipulate them. Most people enjoy the sensation; for some, they report a physical or emotional release, without becoming overwhelmed in the process.

Who should do TRE®?

The Tremor mechanism, or shaking ability, exists in all mammals and humans.  It is the body's most organic and natural way of unraveling contracted or tight stress patterns, as well as reducing the charge of stress hormones and un-healthy chemical build-up, bringing the body back to homeostasis

It is recommended for anyone who:

  • Feels stressed, anxious, or traumatised
  • Feels pain, inflammation, or tightness in their body
  • Is exposed to or has witnessed other people's trauma
  • Is living with health, financial, family, housing, addiction concerns
  • Is being, or has been exposed to war, violence, suppression, or abuse
  • Is resident in a country of cultural, religious, or generational trauma
  • Is working in a difficult or challenging situation that requires conflict resolution
  • has been involved in a vehicle or work-related accident
  • has been involved in a natural disaster
  • Has been diagnosed with PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Initially, people use the words: Grounded, Relaxed, Calmer, Energetic, and less reactive

Over a period of several months:

Pain Level: reported relief from migraines/ headaches, back pain, knee pain, hip pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, TMJ

Emotional level: reported reduced charge or feelings of anger, fear, doubt, worry, control, rage, and anxiety - this means better sleep for many

In the work arena: reported feeling more grounded, confident, social, expressive, open, less defended, capable, and trusting

In the relationship arena: reported feeling more loving, present, less reactive, generous, conversational, intimate, communicative, caring, safe, self-empowered, and orgasmic

How often should I do TRE®?

Initially, we say it is most ideal to experience the TRE® stretches and a subsequent tremor session at least 3-6 times, over a period of 4 - 6 weeks with a certified TRE® Provider - this allows you to become confident in doing the stretches correctly, as well as letting the body become safe and knowledgeable with self-regulating the process at home.

Every individual has his/her own history of trauma and stress; this means that some people may require more or less sessions, to responsibly perform the stretches by themselves.  Once learned and regulated, it is recommended to continue with the process a few times a week (or when required) as a self-help tool for good health, resiliency, and freedom from stress in the human organism.

Can everyone do TRE®?

The stretches are super simple, and we offer a wall, couch, chair, or props as support, should you require them.  For some, we can tailor-make the experience specifically for your needs - this is not recommended in a group.  If detoxing, it is a valuable time to work with releasing old toxins from the system which will promote good health – the stretches are designed to achieve a balance in the physical, emotional, and mental bodies, which supports the detoxification process.

Can I do TRE® on my own?

Provided you have learned from a qualified and certified TRE® Provider, and you feel safe with the practice... Yes, go ahead and try doing it alone. The TRE® stretches were designed and developed as a self-help tool, to be accessed whenever and wherever necessary; you are therefore never reliant on someone else to fix or heal you. We do however recommend checking in every so often with a TRE® Provider to deepen your practice, and access areas that may still feel stuck, particularly if you are dealing with developmental trauma. This can be done in person or on Zoom. For more information contact Fiona.

Private or Group TRE®?

This depends on your levels of stress, tension, and possible trauma in your life.  Some of us are very stiff in our bodies and may need a few privates to work with gently moving some of this tightness, or contractedness out through the body in a safe and supervised manner.  If you want to access older trauma patterns or PTSD issues, it is strongly advised to start with a private session with a Certified TRE® Provider.  Certain people enjoy the energy of a group class, and others feel more private working with a TRE® Provider facilitating the space one-on-one. Once learned, it is helpful to join a 6 - 8 week group a few times a year; this assists in supporting your growth and obtaining support from a growing community.
